Probabilistic stopping rules for GRASP heuristics and extensions

چکیده
The main drawback of most metaheuristics is the absence of effective stopping criteria. Most implementations of such algorithms stop after performing a given maximum number of iterations or a given maximum number of consecutive iterations without improvement in the best known solution value, or after the stabilization of the set of elite solutions found along the search. We propose effective probabilistic stopping rules for randomized metaheuristics such as GRASP. We show how the probability density function of the solution values obtained along the iterations of such algorithms can be used to implement stopping rules based on the tradeoff between solution quality and the time needed to find a solution that might improve the best solution found. We show experimentally that, in the particular case of GRASP heuristics, the solution values obtained along its iterations fit a Normal distribution that may be used to give an online estimation of the number of solutions obtained in forthcoming iterations that might be at least as good as the incumbent. This estimation is used to validate the stopping rule based on the tradeoff between solution quality and the time needed to find a solution that might improve the incumbent. The robustness of this strategy is illustrated and validated by a thorough computational study reporting results obtained with GRASP implementations to four different combinatorial optimization problems.

متن کاملEmergency Location Problems with an M/G/k Queueing System
Since late 1960's, the emergency location problems, fire stations and medical emergency services have attracted the attention of researchers. Mathematical models, both deterministic and probabilistic, have been proposed and applied to find suitable locations for such facilities in many urban and rural areas. Here, we review some models proposed for finding the location of such facilities, wit...
متن کاملHeuristics and Meta-heuristics for 2-layer Straight Line Crossing Minimization
This paper presents extensive computational experiments to compare 12 heuristics and 2 meta-heuristics for the problem of minimizing straight-line crossings in a 2-layer graph. These experiments show that the performance of the heuristics (largely based on simple ordering rules) drastically deteriorates as the graphs become sparser. A tabu search metaheuristic yields the best results for relati...
متن کاملDeriving Stopping Rules for the Probabilistic Hough Transform by Sequential Analysis
It is known that Hough Transform computation can be signiicantly accelerated by polling instead of voting. A small part of the data set is selected at random and used as input to the algorithm. The performance of these Proba-bilistic Hough Transforms depends on the poll size. Most Probabilistic Hough algorithms use a xed poll size, which is far from optimal since conservative design requires th...
متن کاملA New Heuristic Solution Method for Maximal Covering Location-Allocation Problem with M/M/1 Queueing System
We consider the queueing maximal covering location-allocation problem (QM-CLAP) with an M/M/1 queueing system. We propose a new solution procedure based on decomposition of the problem into smaller sub-problems. We solve the resulting sub-problems both with a branch and bound algorithm and with the meta-heuristic GRASP. We also solve the entire model with GRASP. Computational results for these ...
